Amazon to Launch Its Own Productivity Software to Compete with Microsoft Office 365

Amazon is planning to introduce its own productivity software that will compete with similar products from Microsoft Corporation and Alphabet Inc. One of the ways Amazon is planning to go about it is by extending the features of WorkMail and WorkDocs the online retailer’s calendar app and its file storage service. In addition, the company is considering launching new tools such as a spreadsheet and a text editor. The final goal would be to come up with products similar to Microsoft Office, which would be targeted, to customers in the corporate segment.

Video calling

The e-commerce giant is also considering including Chime video, Amazon’s version of Skype, into the productivity suite. With its dominance in the cloud business, the move seems natural for Amazon. However, the online retailer has had some of its reputation damaged after continuing user complaints about slow product updates.

Amazon will have to fight for its share of the market with Microsoft and Google who already dominate the enterprise business segment. Amazon would need to make the best with its available tools by implementing the product on AWS AppStream. Since AppStream applications are cloud-based, they do not consume any processing power since all the resources are offered in the cloud. This would allow subscribers to use the Amazon productivity apps on any device that is HTML5-compliant. In a way, this would be replicating the strategy Microsoft has employed with mail.office365.com

Potentially lucrative

Though Amazon has not revealed when it will be launching the productivity apps, the reports of its plans come at a time when the segment is proving to be a potential cash cow if financial results from Microsoft and Google are anything to go by. In the last couple of quarters, Microsoft has been recording consecutively quarter-on-quarter increase, with slightly over 23 million subscribers for its Office 365 suite of software products. In the most recent quarterly results, revenue went up by 54%.
